It is the year 1975 and Moscow set designer Nora Osecká is burying her grandmother Marusja. From her apartment, she takes a small chest containing the family archive. The first entries were written in 1911 by the Kyiv Jewish intellectual Jakov Oseckij, as he sent letters to his fiancée Marusja. The stories of the granddaughter and her grandfather reflect each other and gradually draw closer. They are joined by the fates of other generations and a multitude of secondary characters. Together, they tell of the catastrophes that have occurred over the past century on the territory of the gradually disappearing Russian Empire, starting with the Jewish pogroms in Kyiv, through Stalin's repressions, and ending with the war in South Ossetia. The novel is based on the real correspondence of the author's grandparents and the investigation file of her unjustly judged grandfather.
