Mirjam and Nia are half-sisters, born in the same year, yet they do not meet at all until they are fourteen. During adolescence, despite their circumstances, they become best friends and experience the good and bad together: first loves, first heartbreaks, first secrets and the first slaps from those they trusted most. The island has always been the place that connects them, where they meet every summer, spend sunny days by the sea and dream about their futures. Now they are to meet there again, just the two of them and a few friends, to celebrate Nia’s fortieth birthday. Yet the peaceful place full of memories has changed, torn apart by the past and strangely pieced together into a caricature of itself. Something is not as it should be. There is someone extra on the island. This gripping, dark story explores the dynamics of human relationships, trauma and deep secrets, and the traces of youth that we carry into adulthood.
