The tragic story of carpenter, unlucky fellow, and later outlaw and prisoner Maxl Novotný from Žďár takes readers to the second half of the nineteenth century, to difficult times when there was no work in Czech villages, leaving only hunger, war, despair, betrayal, and crime. A powerful story about the broken bonds of a young family, about great disappointments and patient waiting, is complemented by images from the everyday lives of ordinary people living less than two hundred years ago in Posázaví. With its rawness and naturalistic harshness, the novel defies the demands of mainstream, smoothly flowing reading; in form, language, and content, it somewhat resembles the classic rural realism of the era of Teréza Nováková. The described phenomena, archetypes, and the values espoused by the protagonist will resonate with today's lovers of (not only) historical prose. The novel Maxl the Arsonist is the author's sixth book. Anna Strnadová received the Literary Award from the weekly Reflex in 2019 for this novel.
