Chakotay has taken command of the ship, and Voyager is dispatched to respond to a distress call from the planet Kero. Together with his first officer, Lieutenant Tom Paris, he must choose whether to obey orders or to save the two lives that are dearest to them. B'Elanna Torres and her daughter Miral are missing after a brutal attack on the Klingon world of Boreth. With the help of Admiral Janeway and many old friends and new allies, the crew must confront an ancient secret that will throw them between two warring sects and the battle for the soul of the Klingon people.

But these events and their consequences are merely a prelude to even darker days. As Voyager is drawn into a desperate struggle, into the events of the Call of Destiny, the fragile lives of the crew are at risk, as are the bonds formed between them in the Delta Quadrant. Although fate has dealt them devastating blows, the crew must rally to face the future.
