During her service aboard the starship Shenzhou, Lieutenant Michael Burnham, a human raised and educated by Vulcans, is promoted to temporary first officer. However, to keep her new position, she must prove to Captain Philippa Georgiou that she deserves it. She gets her chance when the Shenzhou is tasked with protecting a Federation colony that has been attacked by an unknown alien vessel emerging from the darkest depths of the planet's uncharted sea. But as the threat of the mysterious ship's attacks escalates, Starfleet designates the colony as expendable in the name of stopping the threat. To save thousands of innocent lives, Burnham needs to infiltrate the alien ship. In doing so, she must confront her own troubled past and seek help from a man she has been trying to avoid until now.
