Leah and her husband move to the French countryside in pursuit of their dream of becoming self-sufficient and living a happy, healthy life. Faced with reality, however, Leah discovers that things are not as idyllic as she imagined. The hard, relentless work in the garden barely produces enough food or satisfaction, while her teenage daughter’s unpredictable behaviour does nothing to help. On top of that, her husband seems to find one strange excuse after another to leave the house. Where does he go, and who does he meet? The club members are all unusual in their own ways: the aloof Grace, who lives alone, knows everyone and everything, but is not especially loved; uptight Monica, whose husband works abroad while she remains alone in a foreign country with a small baby; handsome builder George, who has never read much and whose reason for joining remains a mystery; and Alfie, almost twenty years younger than the others, who is hiding a dark secret. As they discuss books and characters, they gradually grow closer despite their different personalities and lives, and Leah learns that a happy ending does not always look the way we expect. This warm and beautifully written novel by the author of A Year in the French Countryside and A Month in Provence is a story about holding on to dreams and hope, and about the importance of self-discovery, friendship and books.
