Beschreibung
This Czech-language book offers a radical defence of freedom and, by extension, of Western civilization, which has reached the ideal of freedom, at a time when autocratic tendencies are gaining ground on both the progressive left and the nationalist right. Freedom is examined from several angles, from deeper philosophical reflections to practical political questions, from selected thinkers and exemplary statesmen to a playful look at the flags of freedom and the author’s personal memories of how and why he arrived at his views. The author’s journey towards Christianity, the writers who accompanied him along the way, and reflections on the relationship between gratitude and happiness may seem only indirectly connected with political freedom. We stand on the shoulders of giants: freedom owes much to the wisdom of important thinkers, the prudence of great statesmen and the courage of heroes at crucial moments in history. Because freedom can easily be lost, this book offers guidance on protecting and preserving it even in turbulent times.
