This Czech-language textbook for the third year of primary school is accompanied by two new workbooks and covers all expected outcomes in Czech language education. Writing and reading are interwoven with communication-based activities, while the competencies defined by the Czech Framework Educational Programme are developed through meaningful tasks. The textbook presents a world familiar to children, including family relationships, everyday situations and a child with a disability. The pupils are guided through the subject by the friends Anička and Petr and their mischievous ferret Rózinka, who together discover facts about the Czech language. This naturally incorporates cross-curricular themes related to personal and social education. Grammar is introduced through exercises that lead to the lesson topic, followed by a simple rule and further practice. The activities and information are balanced and suited to the pupils’ expected abilities, while age-appropriate simplifications do not compromise the accuracy of the explanations. Grammar is also functionally connected with composition. Numerous illustrations, systematic colour-coding of important information and pictograms make the textbook easy to navigate, with all graphic elements naturally integrated into the text. The opening section reviews second-year material, including sentences, words, syllables, sounds, the alphabet, spelling u/ú/ů, hard and soft syllables, the groups dě, tě, ně, bě, pě, vě and mě, and consonants within and at the ends of words. Further chapters cover words and their meanings, phonetics and pronunciation. The spelling of i, í, y and ý after paired consonants is divided into two sections and interspersed with lessons on parts of speech and nouns, including their grammatical categories. The final chapter deals with simple and compound sentences, building on the pupils’ knowledge of parts of speech, conjunctions, nouns and verbs. Composition exercises appear throughout the textbook and practise basic forms such as narration and description, as well as everyday communication skills including greetings, introductions, telephone conversations, writing an address, a simple greeting or wish, and an invitation. The textbook also develops reading literacy and reading comprehension. Key material is summarised clearly in rules and tables, with regular revision and consolidation of previously studied topics.
