Jack Reacher is a former military policeman, trained to notice things. He sits on a Greyhound bus, observing an old man asleep, with a thick envelope of cash peeking out of his pocket. Another passenger is also watching the old man... clearly eager to get rich. When the thief finally decides to act, Reacher rushes to help. The old man is grateful but refuses to let Reacher accompany him home. He is vulnerable, scared, and obviously in a lot of trouble. In another part of the city, two ruthless gangs, Ukrainian and Albanian, are fighting for dominance. Do they have the old man in their power? Will Reacher stand by idly and allow the worst to happen? Or will he manage to turn the situation around in favor of those who need it most? "We live in a random universe," Reacher says. "Once in a blue moon, something goes right." Reacher's presence increases the odds. That much is certain.
