Beschreibung
This book is essentially a record of intimate conversations among Iranian women, relatives, and acquaintances of the author, who candidly and humorously discuss intimate, family, and broader issues. The title playfully refers to a certain practice: women in Iran sometimes have their hymens surgically stitched before marriage so that their grooms do not feel deprived of their patriarchal rights and cheated on the goods. Nine ladies, including Marjan's grandmother and mother, discuss everything from the choice (or lack thereof) of a groom to the qualities of men in the West and plastic surgery, all without the presence of men. A very intimate yet impactful work in which the author once again proves to be a master of psychological detail and character portrayal – and moreover, that to create a significant graphic novel, she does not need historical and groundbreaking events like in her most famous work, Persepolis.
