Russian President Krupin is having an unhappy year. Western sanctions are crushing his country's economy, Ukraine's courtship with NATO continues, and mass protests against his authoritarian policies are rising in Russia. Moreover, doctors have discovered that he suffers from a malignant brain tumor. If he is to have a chance of survival, he will have to undergo long-term treatment that will weaken him. Thus, the autocrat decides on a risky course of action: after me, the deluge. The Western world suspects that Krupin might launch an attack on Ukraine to divert attention. However, a politician who has nothing left to lose devises a more devilish plan – an invasion of the three Baltic republics. Since all of them belong to the North Atlantic Alliance, this practically means the start of a world war. Will politicians prevent it? Hardly. The United States has a drastic solution: agent Mitch Rapp and his Russian ally of reason, Gríša Azarov, a former elite assassin of Krupin.
