Friends become victims of intrigue Rome, 68 AD: Emperor Nero has committed suicide, and chaos reigns in the land. Nero's successor, Galba, makes a fatal mistake. He dismisses the incorruptible members of the Germanic Batavians from the imperial guard, whose only crime is loyalty to the dead emperor, and sends them back to their tribal territory in the north. At the same time, he releases their prince from prison and appoints him as the prefect of the disgraced unit. Julius Civilis, however, is far from being the grateful and loyal servant of the empire that the Romans believe him to be. He returns to his Batavian name Kivilaz and is angry and dangerous. In the web of events that will follow, four cohorts – two Roman and two Batavian – become ensnared. Friends and loyal allies turn into victims of intrigue and enemies in an irreconcilable war that is brewing between Rome and the Batavians.
