Seven-year-old Chula and her older sister Cassandra enjoy a carefree life in a country where it can sometimes be dangerous to even step outside, thanks to the protective bubble of their family. Their mother is a stubborn woman with supernatural abilities and obstinately plants a tree that all the neighbors fear because its flowers have strong intoxicating effects, and they are superstitious. The fruit of the drunken tree, narrated alternately from the perspective of headstrong Chula and timid maid Petrona, contrasts two very different but inseparable coming-of-age stories. The author, in fresh prose, illuminates the impossible choices that women are often forced to make and the unexpected female connections that can blossom from despair.
