Edgar Freemantle is a wealthy builder who suffers a brain injury in a construction accident and loses his right arm. During a lengthy recovery, he falls into such fits of rage and memory lapses that his wife leaves him. In deep depression and with thoughts of suicide, he follows the advice of his therapist, Dr. Kamen, to 'change his environment'. He moves from Minnesota to Duma Key, a tiny, almost deserted island off the Florida coast. The doctor urged him: 'Don't you have anything else in your life besides building that could alleviate your depression?' And Edgar Freemantle remembers that he once drew. He discovers that he is a very talented painter and begins to paint on the island. However, strange things start happening with the paintings. Whatever he paints appears in reality, and if he erases it, it disappears. The island has a strange power to amplify and enhance his talent because something evil dwells there...
