This Czech-language historical mystery begins in 1139, when war between the supporters of King Stephen and Empress Matilda drives more than half the population from Worcester in northern England. Among those fleeing are siblings Yves and Ermina Hugonin, accompanied by the young nun Hilaria. They are supposedly heading for Shrewsbury, but never arrive. Brother Cadfael travels to the monastery at Bromfield to learn more about their fate and happens upon Yves, who knows only that his sister disappeared with Evrard Boteler, who once courted her. On his journey home, Cadfael discovers the body of a young girl in a frozen stream and forms a disturbing suspicion. A gang of criminals is exploiting the chaos of war, while an exotic stranger who seems familiar to Cadfael becomes entangled in the case. Whose body has the wise monk found, and does the stranger have anything to do with the crime?
