Hardly has the impoverished knight Jakub Jelínek from Hiršberg recovered from one case when another challenge arises in the autumn of 1597. Possibly even more dangerous. Together with his companion Matěj Sádlo, he sets out to search for a mysterious subiectum, a magical artifact that the emperor Rudolf II himself longs for. Their clues lead them to Most, where the family of the recently deceased alchemist Edward Kelly resides.
The artifact in question is said to be a mirror through which one can supposedly communicate with angels and the spirits of the dead, and its last owner was none other than the famous magistrate. As it soon becomes clear, more people are after the smoky mirror than Jakub would have expected. He soon finds himself in hot water not only because of the attractive Johana Kelly and her daughter but also due to all the cunning opportunists trying to please the emperor.
Bloodthirsty vultures circle around more and more, merciless orders flow from the highest echelons, and something is terribly amiss with Kelly's death. There are too many dangerous traps, and at stake is not only Jakub's and Matěj's honor but also their very lives.
