KATE SHUGAK IS ON THE TRAIL OF ANOTHER PUZZLING CASE ALONGSIDE A MONSTER... Spring has arrived in Alaska, and the warm southern wind has brought a thaw, flooding the reservation with slushy snow. Private investigator Kate Shugak has to deal with a pile of other things, including one long-overdue matter: filing her tax return. But if some people have bad luck sticking to their heels, she must be neck-deep in it, and if some days are bad, then this one is their king. Not only does Kate have to contend with angry grizzly bears and stubborn members of a feuding family, but on top of that, a jet engine crashes into her yard. Annoying agents from the National Transportation Safety Board investigating the accident and a corpse in the woods nearby are just the proverbial cherry on top. Although Kate initially intends to distance herself from the police investigation, she ultimately cannot just stand by idly, and before she knows it, she is on the trail of a dangerous murderer with the Monster by her side.
