NORTHERN CRIME FROM THE TRUE NORTH… Kate Shugak was once a respected investigator for the state attorney's office in Anchorage. But now she hunts criminals only from her family homestead in the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, with her only partner being her loyal wolf-husky mix, Obluda. After a challenging case in the far north, Kate heads out with Obluda to forage in a forest devastated by a terrifying fire. However, in the ashes, she discovers a charred body. The police want to close the case as an accident due to lack of evidence, but Kate's instincts tell her otherwise. And when a distraught ten-year-old boy 'hires' her to find his missing father, Kate begins to fear that she has already found him. Nevertheless, she embarks on a complicated investigation that leads her into a remote, closed community of religious fundamentalists whose beliefs and convictions allow for no opposition. For in the heart of this community, evil simmers, unrestrained by anything – not even murder.
