Live in the saddle. Die on a wild boar. Such is the belief of the half-orcs inhabiting the land of Lot. They belong to the brotherhoods known as the Hooves; these former slaves guard their desolate land on the backs of giant wild boars, specially bred for battle. They are the only thing standing between the decadent heart of the noble Hispart Kingdom and the wild hordes of pure-blooded orcs. Jackal guards his land along with the Grey Bastards, one of the eight Hooves that survived the brutal siege of Lot. Because he is young, cunning, and very ambitious, he proposes to overthrow the tyrannical founder of the Bastards, a warrior known as Claymaster. Jackal's dangerous coup attempt is supported by Boar, a furious hybrid with more orc than human blood, and Beautiful, the only female rider among all the Hooves. When a treacherous plot is revealed due to the arrival of a foreign wizard, Jackal's plans end in chaos and uncertainty. He finds himself in the saddle with a captured elven girl, whose presence begins to disrupt his alliances. With the approaching anarchic bloody ritual of the Moon of Traitors, Jackal must decide whom to remain loyal to and find his place in a world that rewards only the malicious.
