Beschreibung

The connection of femininity, water, and death The book Ophelia and Her Sisters is the result of several years of Radek Malý's scholarly interest in this motif and its depiction in European literature. The "beautiful drowned woman" takes on several basic forms: alongside the multiple artistic representations of the character of Ophelia from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, there is the figure of the so-called Unknown from the Seine, to whom Vítězslav Nezval paid tribute in his poetic composition. The archetype of both figures is the mermaid, who lures men to their doom. The peak of the cult of the drowned girl, the author observes, is found in the poetry of German Expressionism, but it also speaks of the fascination of Czech poets with this motif (e.g., Vladimír Holan or Jan Skácel).
