Beschreibung
In 2001, the Czech Library presented the well-known work of Alois Jirásek (1851—1930), which conveys the national myth to the fifth generation of readers. It now returns to this tradition of Czech prose from the nineteenth century, infused with national spirit and folk wisdom, and presents Old Czech Legends (1894) in an updated edition. Jirásek's retelling of thirty-five of the most famous legends revives not only stories from ancient Czech times and the Christian era but also Prague legends and ancient prophecies. In the commentary, Jaroslava Janáčková and Karel Komárek raise questions about the literary genesis of the work and capture the transformations of its exceptional reception.
