Another case for Commissioner Výrová. Chief Commissioner Marie Výrová, nicknamed "The Great Owl," along with her colleagues, investigates a nighttime robbery during which a group of masked men stole three North American bears from the Olomouc Zoo and simultaneously murdered the night watchman. The investigation is initially unsuccessful; the fundamental question of why someone would need live bears remains unanswered. When the only identified suspect is killed by one of his accomplices, it becomes clear that the detectives are dealing with a very dangerous adversary. Young police officer Kristýna Horová, a former colleague of the Olomouc detectives, has been transferred as a punishment to the district department in Šternberk, where she is concurrently investigating the discovery of five dead dogs, carelessly buried in the woods. Her search leads her to both the underground fighting matches organized by a local "influential businessman" and to the conviction that the two cases are connected. The tension, the entertaining and dark sides of human nature, amplified by the small-town setting, and of course the unique Commissioner Marie Výrová, all feature in this new book.
