By the late 1940s, tensions between the West and the East had reached a critical point. In that situation, war broke out on the Korean Peninsula, which could easily have escalated into a global conflict. Initially, it seemed like a simple victory for North Korea, supported by the Soviet Union. However, the war ultimately lasted three years and ended in a stalemate. Throughout the conflict, the American Air Force played a crucial role. It represented an overwhelming combat force, possessing a fleet of heavy four-engine bombers capable of literally erasing cities deep in enemy territory. Their escort was provided by long-range fighters, and the first jet-powered fighters were already serving in the units. For night interception, there were several types equipped with quality radar to locate enemies hiding in the darkness. Direct support for ground units was provided by fighter-bombers, which swept through enemy rear areas and the front line, destroying all available ground targets with bombs, napalm, and unguided rockets.
