This Czech-language book explains the origins of the term fighter ace, which emerged in France in the summer of 1915 to describe a pilot who had shot down five or more enemy aircraft. It introduces the first single-seat fighter aircraft equipped with forward-firing machine guns and describes how the unofficial but highly valued title was adopted by air forces involved in the First World War and widely used again during the Second World War. Fighter aces became important figures in wartime propaganda, as they played a major role in the success or failure of combat operations, achieved most of their units' victories, and often became commanders or attained high ranks. The book recounts the often very different lives of six men who fought in different years and on different fronts of the Second World War. Some survived until its end, while others died at the controls of their fighters. All contributed significantly to victory and the defeat of fascism in the most terrible conflict in history up to that time.
