The events in the army thirty years ago, during the end of the totalitarian regime through the beginning of the establishment of a democratic state to the division of Czechoslovakia, represent an extraordinarily interesting segment of our history. The theme of the book is therefore the year 1989 in the army, the events during the Velvet Revolution, and the developments leading up to the division of the state in 1992. The military aspects of these events have not yet been comprehensively processed in this way. The topic is not only the organizational development itself but also the internal state of the army in the pivotal year of 1989, the changing position of the army in the awakening society, the influence of international disarmament negotiations on the preparation of reforms, and the first partial withdrawal of the Central Group of Soviet Forces. In November and December 1989, not only the discussed preparations for military intervention are noteworthy but also the reactions to the social movement within military units and the military policy of the Civic Forum. In 1990, the army changed only slowly. However, there were reductions in military service, the introduction of alternative service, and other significant political and humanitarian reforms. There was a new interest from the public, media, and various interest groups in the events surrounding the army.
