This Czech-language book presents an account of flying from the pilot’s left-hand seat. The first movement of the aircraft is unforgettable, evoking the wonder of explorers reaching the North Pole, though with less cold. The author describes the mixture of joy and uncertainty that comes with wondering whether he really belongs there, while his experienced colleague, a captain and instructor, acts as a beginner’s co-pilot and leaves the decisions to him. What feels slow from the ground seems dangerously fast from the left-hand seat. After the first half-hour comes a small disappointment: he cannot sit comfortably on the left. Years spent in the right-hand seat have hidden the strain of leaning left to reach the switches and instruments, most of which are located between the two seats. Soon his neck and back hurt, his legs have nowhere suitable to rest, and after his first flights the new captain returns home feeling as though he has been in the forest cutting down trees.
