Beschreibung
The life and work of Pope Paul VI (1897–1978) should be known by anyone who wants to understand the Church in today's world. Paul VI led the Church during a difficult time full of changes. He experienced two world wars. He successfully concluded the Second Vatican Council. He dealt with the revolutionary atmosphere of the 1960s and, a few years later, with the phenomenon of terrorism. He wrote a beautiful profession of faith (Credo of the People of God) and a controversially received encyclical (Humanae vitae). He opened up to ecumenical efforts, developed interfaith dialogue, and communicated goals with world leaders and the UN. He cared deeply for persecuted Christians in countries behind the Iron Curtain, often choosing risky approaches. He loved our Cardinal Josef Beran from the bottom of his heart. The historical sketch by Jaroslav Šebek and the memories of Agostino Casaroli also shed light on his personal qualities. As Pope Francis said, 'The greatness of Paul VI shines in his humility.'
