Beschreibung

This Czech-language historical work examines the 1571 Battle of Lepanto, the naval clash between the Ottomans and the Venetian-Spanish-papal coalition known as the Holy League. Like Waterloo, Lepanto later entered the historical imagination as a turning point, although its outcome was shaped by a series of coincidences, including orders from Ottoman Sultan Selim II, the ambitions of Pope Pius V and those of the Spanish king’s twenty-four-year-old half-brother, the dreamer Don Juan of Austria. Czech knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem, including lords from Vartenberk and Házmburk, also took part. Several years before Lepanto, the order’s defence of Malta had helped halt Ottoman expansion into the western Mediterranean and begin the long shift from retreat to containment and later pushing back against militant Islam. A painting by Karel Škréta dedicated to Lepanto adorns the altar of the Church of Our Lady beneath the Chain near Charles Bridge in Prague, bearing witness to the Czech contribution to this “holy struggle.”
