The novel captures the difficult period of 1918-1919, when young Czechoslovakia was fighting for the shape of its borders, especially in Slovakia, where a bloody war broke out with the Hungarian Soviet Republic. This is portrayed through the eyes of Italian legionnaires. However, through the main characters, the reader also gets a glimpse into the Serbian army, visits Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution, and peers into the Russian emigration in Paris. There are also memories of wartime loves and post-war reunions, some joyful, others sad. We will also delve into the social life of that time and discover that although 100 years have passed since the described events, some aspects—along with many of the author's reflections and observations—are still relevant today.
