The Battle of Stalingrad was the most significant and decisive confrontation between German and Soviet forces on the Eastern Front. It was not only a massive war of attrition but also a psychological clash of two intensely concentrated wills. It was about much more than just one city. Soldiers, who fiercely engaged each other in the rubble of buildings where people had recently lived, on the endlessly torn slopes of Mamayev Kurgan, in the sewers, increasingly understood day by day what was at stake. In the continuous clashes of hundreds of small assault groups, both physical and mental resilience, initiative, responsibility, and ingenuity of even the last infantryman grew to absolute values. The fate of the city hung by a thread. Defenders held only a narrow strip of shore in places, from which they could be swept away by a single blow. Exhausted to the extreme, the soldiers, remnants of the original units, continued to wage their holy war. The line of battle was a thousand times a broken line, constantly changing shape. There were no two fronts and no man's land between them – only a three-dimensional labyrinth where assault groups attacked each other from the front and back, from the right and left, from above and below...
