Over the course of three centuries of existence of the military chaplaincy in both the Austro-Hungarian and Czechoslovak armies, many dozens of Czech priests have passed through its ranks. They served faithfully and honestly, even though their lives were affected by all the dramatic twists of tumultuous historical events. The presented publication outlines the activities of the military chaplaincy from the earliest times until 1919 and aims to familiarize readers with significant figures of the military clergy and their work in various time periods. In a broader perspective, it touches on other topics of church history, such as the relationship between church and state or the very presence of clergy in the army. Special attention is paid to the Austrian war navy, World War I, the battles in Slovakia, and for the very first time, also to the clergy in the Czechoslovak foreign legions. The book is followed by a second volume presenting the functioning of the chaplaincy in the Czechoslovak army from 1918 to 1950 and the military priests who indelibly inscribed themselves into its history.
