How many forms do heroism, bravery, and courage take? It is hard to quantify something like that; it would be akin to a desire for a touch of the absolute. Each of the eleven stories in this book is new evidence of that. Through documents and personal testimonies of people, the vast majority of whom are no longer alive, the author tells stories of individuals who were as diverse as human society itself. However, one thing connected them: they had a close relationship with sports; some even achieved top performances and status – such as boxers Vilém Jakš and Václav Procházka, Olympian Oskar Hekš, footballer František Kloz, climber Josef Smítka, or gymnastics world champion Jan Gajdoš. They were people who loved life, knew how to enjoy it, and savor all its forms, yet were able to sacrifice everything for the benefit of the ideals they believed in when the moment called for it. And not only that: they managed to multiply their convictions through action and paid the highest price for it.
