Beschreibung
The title of the book from the World War II period is derived from Article XIX of the German-French armistice agreement. It stated that the French were obliged to "hand over on request" to Germany (or more precisely to the Greater German Empire of the German nation) anyone, especially German citizens of Jewish descent fleeing from the then Reich before the Hitler regime. American journalist and humanitarian worker Varian Fry operated in Vichy France from August 1940 to September 1941. During that time, he managed to save about four thousand fleeing intellectuals, social democrats, anti-fascists, and Jews. Among them were prominent figures such as Bohuslav Martinů, Marc Chagall, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Heinrich Mann, and Lion Feuchtwanger. Fry was assisted by many brave individuals, including Czechoslovak consul Vladimír Vochoč. During his lifetime, Varian Fry did not receive much recognition in his country, but in 1997 he was posthumously awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations by the State of Israel, becoming the first American in history to receive this honor. According to his book, a Canadian-British-American film titled Varian's War was made in 2000.
