This children’s adventure novel is one of the finest works by James Oliver Curwood (1878–1927), a great expert on and protector of Canadian nature. Its engaging story follows Miki the dog and Nýwa the bear. In the wilderness, these animals could never have become friends, yet a human being ties them together. Both young animals find themselves, through a series of unexpected circumstances, in the deep northern forests, where they must fend for themselves. They soon free themselves from the rope that binds them, but their friendship surprisingly endures. Readers witness the thrilling adventures Miki and Nýwa experience in beautiful yet merciless surroundings. They must struggle for survival against the wild inhabitants of the forests and ruthless fur hunters. Curwood loved nature, understood it deeply and possessed a romantic spirit. Despite all the unhappy and dangerous events in his books, his animal heroes ultimately find the most precious thing that could happen to them: the love and friendship of good people.
