When a person loses human support, a desire and a question arise in the soul about whether life continues. Not only does the universe have its laws, but there are also laws within the human spirit that show us the desire for a life that does not end with death. This desire is inherent to every human heart. We need to receive love, but we also have the need to give it, right up to our last breath. A person is meant for happiness, and that is entirely inherent to all people. The sick, especially at the end of life, are acutely aware of these truths. Loneliness and abandonment are the most significant signs of our time, but also a provocation for us to do something good in a situation of isolation, especially when dying. My first response to the suffering I encountered as a nurse in the hospital was to change the unfavorable conditions for dying people and support families who wanted to care for their loved ones in their own, natural environment. More than ever, I would like to encourage all of us, healthy people, not to be afraid to enter into the mystery of our loved ones' dying. They need our love, but also practical help. They need to find hope; otherwise, their lives up to that point would lose meaning.
