The publication presents a fairly extensive treatise on the developmental stage of shaping the philosophical and empirical foundations of psychology at a time when psychology was not yet an independent science. In addition to an expansive view on well-known topics, the book also addresses previously unmentioned themes, as the author believes that the influence of mysticism and esoteric systems should also be captured in the history of psychology, as these fields also contributed certain concepts of human mental life. Therefore, it includes a discussion on ancient Greek magic, medieval mysticism, Renaissance hermeticism, mesmerism, and extensive information about the controversy on the topic of spiritualism that took place at the end of the 19th century among several prominent scientists and philosophers. The conclusion of the book is also original, showing how the influence of some representatives of science and philosophy with scientific roots in the 19th century shaped the emergence of significant movements in psychology in the following century (phenomenological psychology with its branches of logotherapy, daseinsanalysis, existential psychology, as well as gestaltism, psychoanalysis, personality psychology, or ego psychology).
