Beschreibung
Being a girl and living in a Mormon community of the righteous is no picnic, even if you are the granddaughter of its founders and the thirty-ninth child of its leader. The author's grandparents, the LeBarons, founded the eponymous colony in rural northern Mexico in 1944, and soon other polygamous families joined them. When the girl's father was murdered in a power struggle, her mother (the author was her fourth child) married a despot and brute who even abused his own children. After the family tragedy, his stepchildren dared to make a brave escape to the United States, where the author settled and happily married. The crunch of gravel on the driveway in LeBaron became a symbol of her troubled childhood and life with her mother, whom she still remembers with love. She depicts everyday life in the poor colony with the simplicity of a child and the skill of a mature writer.
