When she began keeping a diary, she may already have suspected that her marriage was a mistake. Nevertheless, she remained in it for fifty-eight years. After her husband’s death, she reflects on life with a self-centred egotist, describing his slights, malicious acts, insults and rough treatment factually and almost without emotion, sometimes culminating in physical assault. Some of the recorded incidents are barely believable, while others send a chill down the spine. The heroine is nevertheless able to assess her fate with perspective and a sense of humour. Her diary warns anyone who believes that a violent partner can be changed, educated or reformed, and appeals to indifferent witnesses of domestic violence who refuse to intervene, hiding behind the idea that what happens at home should stay there. The book is in Czech.
