Krakow, 1942. Ela and Sára come from two completely different worlds. Sára Gaultová is barely eighteen and is hiding with her parents in the underground sewer, where they had to flee when the Nazis began to liquidate the Krakow ghetto. Ela Szczepanková is an orphaned Pole from a wealthy family who lives only with her hateful, Nazi-collaborating stepmother. On one fateful day, Ela catches a glimpse of Sára's eyes through the bars of the sewer, and the lives of both girls intersect. The budding friendship is increasingly tested in the deteriorating war atmosphere. Will Sára survive the war? And will Ela help her, or will she instead follow in the footsteps of her stepmother?
