World War II is a crucial milestone in both our and world history. It rightfully remains a constant subject of memories, reflections, and considerations of both the events of that time and their later and current interpretations and contexts. This year, however, we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of this greatest war catastrophe in human history in a somewhat peculiar domestic political and social atmosphere, which too easily facilitates the misuse of historical events for contemporary political struggle, but is also conducive to the dangerous distortion of history. The book contains two extensive authorial texts that approach the topic very differently. Jiří Weigl's text attempts to discuss the history of World War II from a Czech perspective and comment on its various contemporary interpretations and their pitfalls. Ivo Strejček discusses the pivotal points of our war history - the Czech-German issue, Munich, the personality of E. Beneš, and liberation in relation to today and its problems. War history must be remembered and discussed, and we must not allow its rewriting and distortion. For it is from this that our present arises.
