Beschreibung
This collection contains seven stories, three of which were published in 1950, while some were written during breaks and spare moments while Jean Giono was working on The Hussar on the Roof. Almost all the stories explore a dizzying fascination with blood and death: “What we seek in everything is always one and the same: we seek something new. Yet nothing is new; only blood can bring something new.” One story describes strange customs associated with harvesting grapes from mountain vineyards and preparing wine; in another, the death of a wealthy landowner leads potential heirs to kill one another. A further tale concerns a cross laying waste to a house, while the final story follows a hitchhiker who may or may not be the embodiment of the Devil. All the stories are set in the same region as Giono’s novel A King Without Amusement: the rugged mountain landscape around Mens and Tréminis.
