This Czech-language book presents the work of Swiss philosopher and essayist Denis de Rougemont (1906–1985), one of the most renowned European intellectuals of the 20th century. From 1930, he was associated with the French personalists, who advocated a third way between individualism and collectivism, and after the Second World War he also defended and actively promoted the idea of a European federation. His most famous work, Love and the West, first published in October 1939, immediately attracted both praise and criticism throughout the Western cultural world. Its critical interpretation of the story of Tristan and Isolde as a myth that, from the Middle Ages onward, became a driving force in Europe’s spiritual development, unleashing both creative and destructive energies, crosses the boundaries of academic disciplines and remains compelling even after almost a century.
