The collection of works by Zdeněk Neubauer in two volumes, featuring texts spanning thirty-five years from 1979 to 2014, connects the issues of theoretical biology and the philosophy of biology. The author considered questions of biological knowledge, its assumptions, and consequences to be the most important throughout his life: they were motivated by his experiences in his own experimental work as a microbiologist and molecular geneticist and formed the conceptual core of his further epistemological and philosophical reflections. The collection is organized chronologically according to the creation of the texts, allowing for a coherent and developmental view of Neubauer's thinking.

The first volume contains theoretical-biological essays by Zdeněk Neubauer from the period up to 1989 and appendices that document his original biological experimental work. The first section includes texts characterized by the author's effort to capture the specificity of biological knowledge through analogies and alternatives to mechanistic and informational approaches.
