The early work Daniel. Die Gespräche von der Verwirklichung (1913) is characterized as a germinal reference to the later differentiated philosophy of I and Thou, yet due to its style and overall tone, it is perceived more as a certain echo of Hölderlin's Hyperion and Nietzsche's Zarathustra.
The foundation of the five poetic-philosophical dialogues, in which the character named Daniel predominates, is the theme of realization, actualization. This concept, in Buber's view, touches upon the realization of the uncreated through the created, and especially its human reflection through 'responses,' i.e., actions. It is elaborated in chapters on orientation, reality, meaning, polarity, and unity. In contrast to 'orientation,' 'familiarity,' which is an approach to life based on inherited certainties, the author describes realization that is not the actualization of some 'idea' through human action (as Buber's conception of the realization of God has sometimes been mistakenly understood), but rather making the world real for divine presence – gottwirklich.
The state of mind, which is one of the prerequisites for this process, is introduced by the author precisely through the initiatory possibilities of dialogue, in which speech touches upon essence.
