Women in Love is not only a novel of passion but also a peculiar kind of novel of ideas. It contains countless reflections on the existence of the individual, society, nation, and humanity. D. H. Lawrence himself considered this novel to be his best work. Its axis is the complicated, constantly changing relationship between two couples, one of which matures through sharp conflicts to life fulfillment, while the other tragically falls apart. It is as if Ursula and Birkin, along with Gudrun and Gerald, embody the typical Lawrence polarity of love and hate, creation and destruction, life and death, creation and annihilation, escalating to self-destruction. The novel focuses on the analysis of the relationships between the two sisters, their surroundings, and especially their lovers. The quartet of lovers is complemented by numerous other characters and relational entanglements that Lawrence analyzes with remarkable sensitivity. His subjective life experiences are reflected in all his works with extraordinary intensity. It is almost unprecedented how masterfully and with unprecedented empathy he managed to capture the female psyche and sexuality.
