The daughter grew fond of them and spent every free moment with them. She trained them, fed them, played with them... But it wasn't always easy. "Sometimes they demanded food at unusual hours, like three in the morning, when their desperate quacking appealed to our insensitivity, and it was clear they wouldn't last until breakfast and would definitely die because we hadn't given them enough for dinner." And gradually, everything became more dramatic; the real Canadian winter came, the ducks didn't fly south for warmth, and rescuing them from the frozen lake where they were stuck required a bit of courage.
