This Czech-language detective novel follows detective Richard Krauz as he investigates a disturbing case at the turn of the millennium. Two hours before midnight on New Year’s Eve 1999, Krauz is called to a cemetery, where a gravestone has been splashed with blood. Even more mysterious is the freshly carved date of death: tomorrow, the first day of the new millennium. At first it seems like a foolish joke, but the detective’s amusement ends when the operations centre reports that the owner of the grave has actually died an hour after midnight. Fate has played a cruel trick on him: however precisely he planned his death, someone got there first. The man was shot in the back, in circumstances that rule out suicide. The homicide department faces another baffling case, but it is far from the only one. The magical night dividing two millennia brings further surprises, and surprises at the homicide department usually cost an innocent person their life.
