Yakari is an Indian boy who has extraordinary dreams, in which he mostly meets the Great Eagle, his totem animal. The eagle advises him to behave in a way that resembles him as much as possible. Therefore, Yakari goes and imitates the eagle; however, he takes it too literally (for example, he tries to fly), so his efforts sometimes do not go as planned. Together with his friend Bison Grain, they set out to observe hunters while they hunt mustangs. On this occasion, Yakari saves Little Lightning, an elusive and untamed mustang, and the Great Eagle rewards him with an eagle feather for this act. However, no one in the camp believes Yakari about how he got the feather, and his father takes it away from him. After many adventures, Yakari eventually earns the feather. Another great gain from all these adventures is the friendship of Little Lightning, through which Yakari discovers another special gift of his: he can communicate with animals.
