The term "sub-story" was first used by the writer Karel Čapek to denote a very short story that contains only a punchline. Such is also the collection of police sub-stories, set in the time of Čapek's Stories from One Pocket and Stories from the Other Pocket. The individual sub-stories are based on real cases and events that the police encountered during their demanding service. ***** In the case of a rumor about a crime, it was necessary to interview the individuals through whom the rumor spread and trace it back to its very source to ascertain whether it was based on anything or not, so that either criminal proceedings could be initiated against a specific person or such suspicion could be shelved ad acta.
