This Czech-language epic poem, known as The Man in the Tiger's Skin and as Vepkhistkhaosani in Georgian, is a literary masterpiece of worldwide significance by the 12th-century Georgian writer, poet and statesman Šota Rustaveli. It was written during the period known as the Golden Age, when the country was ruled by Queen Tamar, a woman who governed in a time of great intellectual openness. The poem is filled with humanist ideals and tells a story of love, friendship, courage and bravery. It is rich in aphorisms and poetic imagery, and carries universal, timeless values. Today, the poem has been translated into more than fifty languages, while a collection of 162 surviving manuscripts, the oldest dating from the early 16th century, is listed as UNESCO World Heritage.
